OPEN CALL (3).png
Fort Monroe Virginia
Hey Queens,

Welcome to the Miss Juneteenth VA
Legacy Pageant™.

Resilient. Diverse. Infinitely Magical.

Juneteenth represents a historical period in our nation's history, the emancipation of slavery.  Virginia holds a special place in history.  Virginia played a major role that led to a chain of events that affected the emancipation of all enslaved people.  Virginia is where the first documented Africans arrived in 1619 via the Portuguese pirate ship, the White Lion.  Virginia is also where emancipation gained ground during the Civil War at Old Point Comfort (present-day Fort Monroe) in Hampton, Virginia.

Fast forward to the present day, Juneteenth commemorates and memorializes the journeys our Ancestors endured on their quest for freedom, education, and independence.  The Miss Juneteenth Virginia Legacy Pageant, in partnership with the Miss Juneteenth USA national pageant program, aims to highlight our strengths, talents, and accomplishments while elevating and empowering Black America's youth to "unleash their greatness" in our shared futures as a community and a people.  The organization is a platform that cultivates African American culture through cultural awareness and mentorship while providing gateways of opportunities for young African American women of color.

Meet The 1st Miss Juneteenth Virginia

The Crown Jewel of the Commonwealth

High School Student Miss Sunshine Huggins of Smithfield, VA, was crowned in Williamsburg, Virginia on June 19th, 2023.  Miss Huggins is a rising senior at Smithfield High School who plans to minor in surgical technology coupled with a four-year degree in Music Therapy.

She advocates for truth, nature, and mental wellness for youth across the Commonwealth. Ultimately, she believes that Virginia should be "front and center" for Juneteenth initiatives because so many "firsts" occurred here on our shores. Such as, the very first reading of the Emancipation Proclamation to the Southern States was delivered under the Emancipation Oak here in Hampton, VA.

Sunshine will represent the Commonwealth of Virginia at the National Miss Juneteenth USA Scholarship Pageant as she continues to elevate Virginia's role in Emancipation,  Juneteenth Commemoration, and the "Story of Us."

Fun Facts:

  • She has been playing the Harp since age 5

  • Loves Fruit

  • Favorite Genre of Music: R&B
